How do I know if my bank account has been opened?
To check whether a new bank account has been opened without your knowledge, request a copy of your credit file from the relevant credit reporting agencies.
Calling your bank's customer service line will provide you with the same information, including whether your bank account is active or not. You must provide the customer service representative with certain information on your bank account in order to do this, like your name, bank account number, bank branch name, etc.
Most banks will let you see your statements from the past year online, and will keep information on your statements for five years or longer – which is helpful if you opened your account recently. If your bank account is older, you can contact your bank to ask when you opened your account.
In addition to free credit reports, you're also legally entitled to a free annual report from ChexSystems, a consumer reporting agency that collects information about your banking history. This includes activity on your checking accounts, savings accounts and money market accounts.
You can get a current view of your finances by visiting the bank's website or mobile app. An ATM visit, phone call or bank statement are other convenient ways to check your balance. If you prefer to speak with someone in person, you also have the option of talking to a bank teller.
You'll receive notice of account closure. It's usually not far in advance or you may have found out when attempting to use a debit card that was declined despite a sufficient amount of money in the account. Your account may be frozen. Debits will be blocked and deposits won't make it in.
Processing your application and issuing your account number could take a day or two. Opening a bank account online can be the easiest way to do so but it isn't likely to be the fastest. If you'd prefer to open an account in person, the process may take much longer (i.e. 30 minutes to an hour or more).
If you're not careful, identity thieves can emerge silently and disappear before you discover you've been targeted. They can open bank accounts in your name, change your address, and take over your online accounts.
Account numbers are like unique identification numbers which cannot be re-allotted to anyone but the entity to whom they were first allotted. Closed or open everything is traceable and under present technology the details of statement will be there even after 100 years.
If a bank denied your application for a new checking or savings account, it could be that you were blacklisted due to negative information on your ChexSystems report. You still have options, though.
What to do if someone keeps opening bank accounts in your name?
To report identity theft, contact: The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) online at IdentityTheft.gov or call 1-877-438-4338. The three major credit reporting agencies. Ask them to place fraud alerts and a credit freeze on your accounts.
Speak with the fraud department and explain that someone has stolen your identity. Request to close or freeze any accounts that may have been tampered with or fraudulently established. Make sure to change your online login credentials, passwords and PINs.
Check financial records.
Look through bank statements, credit card bills, and other financial records to see if there are any unusual transactions or accounts that you don't recognize. Pay attention to large withdrawals, cash advances, or purchases that seem out of the ordinary.
Visit your bank's Net Banking portal or log in to the mobile banking app. Select the “e-bank statement” or “e-passbook” option from the menu. Enter the statement period to view the debits and credits of a particular duration.
The transfer may be declined or returned
Often, if a financial institution receives a request for transfer and doesn't have an account with a matching account number, or the account has been closed, the transfer will be declined. No money will be exchanged. The funds will remain with the sender.
A closed account refers to a deactivated or terminated account; in other words, it's no longer open and available for deposits and withdrawals.
Once your account is closed, you will lose access to any funds in that account. It's essential to communicate with the bank to transfer any remaining funds to another account swiftly.
Most banks no longer allow others to check or know your bank account balance. However, some banks provide the account balance details when people simply call and request it. For instance, anyone knowing your account information can call the bank to verify the fund on a cheque.
Typically, though, it takes several years of little to no activity for a bank to pull the plug on an account. Generally, a bank considers an account “abandoned” if the account holder fails to initiate any activity over a three- to five-year period, or if the account holder hasn't contacted the bank during that time.
If you do, opening an account at a bank or credit union is straightforward. The interest they pay for savings accounts You usually need to make an initial deposit between $25 and $100 to open a savings or checking account. Find out how much you must keep in the account at all times to avoid or reduce fees.
What information does a scammer need to access my bank account?
The easiest way to become a victim of a bank scam is to share your banking info — e.g., account numbers, PIN codes, social security number — with someone you don't know well and trust. If someone asks for sensitive banking details, proceed with caution.
However, a hidden bank account might: Not be under your name. For instance, if you set up an offshore asset protection trust, the trust could have a bank account that stores the income for the trust, and you might receive distributions from that bank account/trust setup. In a different jurisdiction than your own.
Direct communication: The bank or credit card company may notify the individual about account closures or restrictions due to blacklisting. ChexSystems: Banks use ChexSystems to track fraudulent activity. If someone is listed in ChexSystems, they may be denied bank accounts.
To check if you are blacklisted, you can receive an annual complimentary credit report. This can be obtained from any of the prominent credit bureaus in South Africa. The report provides information on your credit score and allows you to review for any potential inaccuracies.
Banks may flag your account for review if transactions exceed certain thresholds, typically involving deposits or withdrawals of $10,000 or more in the United States, due to regulations aimed at preventing money laundering and other illicit activities.
