Yes, the Beam (Gen 2) + Sub Mini setup does support Dolby Atmos and 5.1 surround sound. But if you want to experience a true surround experience, adding a pair of surround speakers to your setup will make a big difference.
The center tunnel can face in any direction. If you place Sub Mini against a wall or your furniture, leave enough clearance for air to move freely through the center tunnel. Note: Make sure the speaker you're pairing Sub Mini with is already set up in your system before you add Sub Mini.
The Sonos Sub is a wireless subwoofer that handles all the lower frequencies of your audio content, commonly known as bass. Bass is arguably one of the most important elements of a track because without bass your audio would lack life and sound a bit flat.
Adding any Sonos Sub to a setup actually improves the setup as a whole. By taking on the lower frequencies, it frees up more processing power in the connected soundbar or speakers to enhance the other arrays.
Sub is designed to sit on the floor. You can place it in a corner, against the wall, behind, under, or next to any piece of furniture on any kind of floor surface. Position Sub either vertically or horizontally.
If you have other places in the room it may work that aren't up front give those a shot with a sub crawl. Behind the TV unit definitely won't be ideal, but it may be "good enough".
Stand upright or lay flat for flexible placement. Built-in rubber feet; optional felt feet. Sub works with all Sonos products except the non-amplified Sonos Connect.
Sub signals are non-directional and the Sonos Sub is designed to be placed anywhere. Just stick it whereever it looks good and see if it sounds good. Unless you have a weird room shape or objects blocking the sound there shouldn't be any issues.
How many watts is the Sonos mini Sub?

The sub drew about 1.5W on standby and about 5.5W when playing music at a comfortable volume, or up to 50W when maxed out. It drew up to 17W when watching a movie at higher volumes, consuming about 0.010kWh over the space of two hours.
I tested the arc in the showroom of my local dealer with the sub mini and with the sub both with music and top gun movie. In both cases the soundbar freed from the bass sounds better. The mini make the bass sound better, definitely bit there was still too much arc for the sub.
The Sub Mini can pair with any of Sonos's soundbars, including the Arc (above).
If your Sonos product is receiving an Atmos signal from your TV, it will be displayed within the Sonos App on both the “Now Playing” screen and within the “About My System” menu.
Not only do they help add much needed weight to the best soundbars or stereo speakers' output, they help balance your audio to give you a far richer listening experience – which is why home theater installers recommend multiple subs.
Whichever subwoofer you go for depends on what you require from it and the space you're using it in. In bigger rooms the Sub Gen 3 is best suited, especially when paired with the Sonos Arc soundbar. For smaller rooms and less powerful speakers, the Sub Mini offers a balanced, integrated low frequency performance.
From our extensive testing, we'd suggest the Sonos Sub Mini is the best match for the Beam (Gen 2); along with both being relatively discreet options, the pair compliment each other exceptionally well and make for a killer combination in those smaller or medium-sized home cinema setups.
Our Verdict
The full 5.1. 2 setup of the Sonos Arc with Sub + One SL Speakers is much better than the Sonos Arc soundbar by itself. Adding the two rear satellites provides a much better surround sound experience, which is very immersive with surround content.
Anyone with an existing Sonos Beam setup (particularly the latest Dolby Atmos Gen 2 version) might have found the jump to a Sub Gen 3 too much for your budget, space or even for your neighbours. For you - this could be the solution.
How do I make my Sonos sub louder?
- Open the Sonos app.
- From the Settings tab, press System.
- Press the name of the room you'd like to adjust.
- Press EQ, and then drag the sliders to make adjustments.
Ideally, Sonos recommends that each speaker is placed roughly 10 feet from your viewing position on each side and angled towards you. You can buy wall-mount brackets from Sonos or Amazon for pretty cheap, too.
You should seriously think of another way to conceal your sub if that is your goal. Place it behind a chair or sofa or in a corner out of the way. You might even consider placing it flat under a chair or soda. Any of the above IMO is a better option versus inside a cabinet.
We highly recommend you use it and re-run it should you later move things around. One placement option for a second Sub is to put it on the same wall as your original but on the other side of the room. This will keep both subs in front of you.
Wireless and stress-free
Quickly add Sub to your system over WiFi with a little help from the Sonos app.
