How many ETF issuers are there?
Generally speaking, fewer than 10 ETFs are likely enough to diversify your portfolio, but this will vary depending on your financial goals, ranging from retirement savings to income generation.
Experts agree that for most personal investors, a portfolio comprising 5 to 10 ETFs is perfect in terms of diversification.
Basic Info. US Number of ETFs is at a current level of 3152.00, up from 3108.00 last month and up from 2857.00 one year ago.
The Big 5 ETF Issuers
iShares (BlackRock): $2.59 trillion. Vanguard: $2.36 trillion. SPDR (State Street): $1.22 trillion. Invesco: $454.78 billion.
The ETF issuer is the fund management company that creates, sells and markets an ETF. They are also responsible for choosing the different companies that are involved in the smooth running of the ETF such as the custodian, the auditor, the administrator and the authorized participants.
Generally speaking, fewer than 10 ETFs are likely enough to diversify your portfolio, but this will vary depending on your financial goals, ranging from retirement savings to income generation.
However, it's important to balance diversification and complexity. Holding too many ETFs can limit gains and make it harder to manage, while holding too few can increase risk. Aim for around 10 to 20 diversified ETFs that align with your goals and risk tolerance.
How big is the US ETF market? As of December 2022, the total number of index-based and actively managed ETFs, including commodity ETFs, domiciled in the United States stood at 2,844.
In 2023, the U.S. domestic ETF market was about $7.3 trillion. By the end of August 2023, there were 9,904 ETFs worldwide.
The number of exchange traded funds (ETFs) worldwide grew markedly during the period from 2003 to 2022. There were 8,754 ETFs globally in 2022, compared to 276 in 2003. As of 2022, ETFs worldwide managed assets up to almost 10 trillion U.S. dollars.
Who is the king of ETFs?
The reigning king
The SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust (SPY) remains at the forefront of S&P 500 ETFs, boasting an impressive $478 billion in assets under management (AUM). Remarkably, this ETF celebrated its 31st anniversary on January 22, 2024, coinciding with the day the S&P 500 index reached its recent all-time high.
BlackRock's Overall Lead
The world's largest asset manager with more than $9 trillion in AUM still has more of the total ETF market, owning 31.7% overall while Vanguard has 29%, according to Bloomberg data. State Street is the third largest issuer with 14.8% of the total market.

First, there is the management fee, or the total expense ratio. This is the largest source of revenue, according to issuers. Secondly, there are revenues generated from hedging and inventory management. The ETF issuer will hedge exposure to the swap by buying the underlying index components in the index being tracked.
The most important part of the idea of an investment company is that it's owned by its shareholders. Every individual who owns a share of an ETF or mutual fund has a direct ownership stake in all of the assets of the fund, and a vote in how that fund is managed, much like a corporate shareholder.
An ETF sponsor is the issuer and fund manager that administers and markets an exchange-traded fund (ETF). An exchange-traded fund is a type of security that tracks an index, sector, commodity, or other assets, but which can be purchased or sold on a stock exchange the same as a regular stock.
For most standard, unleveraged ETFs that track an index, the maximum you can theoretically lose is the amount you invested, driving your investment value to zero. However, it's rare for broad-market ETFs to go to zero unless the entire market or sector it tracks collapses entirely.
Vanguard S&P 500 ETF holds a Zacks ETF Rank of 2 (Buy), which is based on expected asset class return, expense ratio, and momentum, among other factors. Because of this, VOO is a great option for investors seeking exposure to the Style Box - Large Cap Blend segment of the market.
The single biggest risk in ETFs is market risk. Like a mutual fund or a closed-end fund, ETFs are only an investment vehicle—a wrapper for their underlying investment. So if you buy an S&P 500 ETF and the S&P 500 goes down 50%, nothing about how cheap, tax efficient, or transparent an ETF is will help you.
However, 3x exchange-traded funds (ETFs) are especially risky because they utilize more leverage in an attempt to achieve higher returns. Leveraged ETFs may be useful for short-term trading purposes, but they have significant risks in the long run.
Is it bad to own too many ETFs?
The disadvantages are complexity and trading costs. With so many ETFs in the portfolio, it's important to be able to keep track of what you own at all times. You could easily lose sight of your total allocation to stocks if you hold 13 different stock ETFs instead of one or even five.
Since its inception in September 2010, the ETF has provided an average annual return of 13.91%. If you invested $3,600 per year over 40 years with that return less expenses, you'd wind up with over $5.3 million. It would only take an annual investment of $680 for your money to grow to $1 million.

Are ETFs Safer Than Stocks? ETFs are baskets of stocks or securities, but although this means that they are generally well diversified, some ETFs invest in very risky sectors or employ higher-risk strategies, such as leverage.
