Who is an ETF issuer?
The ETF issuer is the fund management company that creates, sells and markets an ETF. They are also responsible for choosing the different companies that are involved in the smooth running of the ETF such as the custodian, the auditor, the administrator and the authorized participants.
Currency ETFs enable investors to invest in or short any major currency or a basket of currencies. They are issued by Invesco and Deutsche Bank among others.
The Big 5 ETF Issuers
iShares (BlackRock): $2.59 trillion. Vanguard: $2.36 trillion. SPDR (State Street): $1.22 trillion. Invesco: $454.78 billion.
An ETF sponsor is the issuer and fund manager that administers and markets an exchange-traded fund (ETF). An exchange-traded fund is a type of security that tracks an index, sector, commodity, or other assets, but which can be purchased or sold on a stock exchange the same as a regular stock.
An exchange-traded fund (ETF) is a basket of securities you buy or sell through a brokerage firm on a stock exchange. WILEY GLOBAL FINANCE.
Upon approval, the sponsor forms an agreement with an authorized participant, generally a market maker, specialist, or institutional investor, who will create and redeem ETF shares. The authorized participant acquires stock shares and places those shares in a trust, then uses them to form ETF creation units.
Most ETF income is generated by the fund's underlying holdings. Typically, that means dividends from stocks or interest (coupons) from bonds. Dividends: These are a portion of the company's earnings paid out in cash or shares to stockholders on a per-share basis, sometimes to attract investors to buy the stock.
The reigning king
The SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust (SPY) remains at the forefront of S&P 500 ETFs, boasting an impressive $478 billion in assets under management (AUM). Remarkably, this ETF celebrated its 31st anniversary on January 22, 2024, coinciding with the day the S&P 500 index reached its recent all-time high.

Are ETFs redeemed by the issuer?
The ETF Redemption Process
Redemption basket: The AP notifies the ETF issuer of its intent to redeem shares. The ETF issuer provides the AP with a "redemption basket," specifying the securities that will be received in exchange for the redeemed ETF shares.
In essence, the ETF distributor and the AP work together to facilitate the creation and redemption of ETF shares. The process works like this: An ETF distributor and an AP will sign an agreement “authorizing” the AP to create and redeem shares with a specific ETF.
Issuers versus Investors
While the entity that creates and sells a bond or another type of security is referred to as an issuer, the individual who buys the security is an investor. In some cases, the investor is also referred to as a lender.

Who can start an ETF? Sponsors must be willing to register with the SEC as a Sub-Adviser, or if an index provider, establish a robust compliance program subject to Board approval. While anyone can start an ETF, we screen candidates for a commitment to compliance and a robust, viable business plan.
Is It Possible to Create Your Own ETF? If you have the financial expertise and a stash of seed money, creating an ETF is within your reach. You can even pay a web-based company to guide you through the process and manage your fund for you.
ETFs are bought and sold just like stocks (through a brokerage house, either by phone or online), and their price can change from second to second. Mutual fund orders can be made during the day, but the actual trade doesn't occur until after the markets close.
The ETF issuer is the fund management company that creates, sells and markets an ETF. They are also responsible for choosing the different companies that are involved in the smooth running of the ETF such as the custodian, the auditor, the administrator and the authorized participants.
Do you actually own the stock in an ETF?
Exchange-traded funds work like this: The fund provider owns the underlying assets, designs a fund to track their performance and then sells shares in that fund to investors. Shareholders own a portion of an ETF, but they don't own the underlying assets in the fund.
An exchange-traded fund, or ETF, allows investors to buy many stocks or bonds at once. Investors buy shares of ETFs, and the money is used to invest according to a certain objective. For example, if you buy an S&P 500 ETF, your money will be invested in the 500 companies in that index.
Buffett's favorite ETF
There are only two ETFs in Berkshire Hathaway's (NYSE: BRK. A) (NYSE: BRK.B) portfolio: the SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust (NYSEMKT: SPY) and the Vanguard 500 Index Fund ETF (NYSEMKT: VOO). Both are index ETFs that track the S&P 500.

With hundreds of billions in the fund, it's among the most popular ETFs. The fund is sponsored by State Street Global Advisors — another heavyweight in the industry — and it tracks the S&P 500. Expense ratio: 0.095 percent. That means every $10,000 invested would cost $9.50 annually.
