Why not to invest in multiple mutual funds?
Bhatt advised, “Investing in too many mutual funds can lead to over-diversification, which can actually reduce the potential returns of your investment portfolio. Diversification is important to manage risk, but when you have too many funds, it can lead to a dilution of returns.”
While mutual funds are popular and attractive investments because they provide exposure to a number of stocks in a single investment vehicle, too much of a good thing can be a bad idea. The addition of too many funds simply creates an expensive index fund.
It's important to make sure that your portfolio is well-diversified, but holding too many funds means there's a risk some may overlap. The value of investments can fall as well as rise and you could get back less than you invest. If you're not sure about investing, seek independent advice.
Financial planners say it is difficult to put a cap on the number of schemes in an investor's portfolio, as investors increasingly use mutual funds to meet both long-term and short-term goals. However, they feel investors should restrict themselves to 10 schemes, as a higher number is difficult to monitor and manage.
While there's no fixed rule, a lower overlap is better for diversification. Aim to keep it below 33% for a balanced portfolio. To reduce overlap: Diversify across fund categories systematically: Investing in funds from different categories won't guarantee low overlap unless chosen strategically.
Let's factor in your age. There's a useful formula that suggests you invest a percentage equal to a hundred minus your age in a carefully selected portfolio of Equity Mutual Fund SIPs. That would be 65 per cent (100-35) of your monthly savings, which translates to Rs 39,000 per month (65 per cent of Rs 60,000).
If she is a conservative investor and is unwilling to take on much risk, then large caps are advisable. She must only consider investing in mid and small caps if she is willing to take high risk to earn higher returns and has a longer investment horizon, so as not to be tormented with the short-term volatility.
Investing in multiple mutual funds can be a smart move to diversify your portfolio and benefit from professional asset management, but it also carries the potential for over-diversification and higher transaction costs.
While there is no precise answer for the number of funds one should hold in a portfolio, 8 funds (+/-2) across asset classes may be considered optimal depending on the financial objectives and goals of the investor. Further, higher allocation of portfolio to the right fund is of crucial importance.
Accordingly, your portfolio must be divided between liquid funds and debt funds. Within debt funds how much should be in duration above 5 years and duration below 5 years and how much should be in duration under 1 year. That will depend on your outlook on interest rates.
Is it bad to have too many mutual funds?
But while diversification is important, it doesn't mean that you keep adding new funds to your portfolio. Investing in too many funds, and justifying it as diversification, is redundant. Beyond a point, there are no additional (diversification) benefits available if you increase the number of funds in the portfolio.
Plainly, keeping investing simple is a goal of many investors. Unlike me, most folks don't relish the prospect of spending endless hours researching funds. So, I got to thinking: How many Vanguard index funds do you really need to be a successful investor? My conclusion: You can do a terrific job with just two.
A general rule of thumb is that cash or cash equivalents should range from 2% to 10% of your portfolio, although the right answer for you will depend on your individual circ*mstances.
You have a low risk appetite and cannot tolerate market fluctuations. You can apply the 80-20 rule by investing 80% of your portfolio in debt mutual funds that invest in high-quality and low-duration securities, and 20% in equity mutual funds that can provide some growth and diversification.
Specifically, a fund is prohibited from: acquiring more than 3% of a registered investment company's shares (the “3% Limit”); investing more than 5% of its assets in a single registered investment company (the “5% Limit”); or. investing more than 10% of its assets in registered investment companies (the “10% Limit”).
Diversified management investment companies have assets that fall within the 75-5-10 rule. A 75-5-10 diversified management investment company will have 75% of its assets in other issuers and cash, no more than 5% of assets in any one company, and no more than 10% ownership of any company's outstanding voting stock.
The 120-age investment rule states that a healthy investing approach means subtracting your age from 120 and using the result as the percentage of your investment dollars in stocks and other equity investments.
Imagine you wish to amass $3000 monthly from your investments, amounting to $36,000 annually. If you park your funds in a savings account offering a 2% annual interest rate, you'd need to inject roughly $1.8 million into the account.
Let's say you want to become a millionaire in five years. If you're starting from scratch, online millionaire calculators (which return a variety of results given the same inputs) estimate that you'll need to save anywhere from $13,000 to $15,500 a month and invest it wisely enough to earn an average of 10% a year.
Mid-caps are slightly riskier than large-cap stocks and less risky than small-cap stocks. Small-cap stocks are riskier than the other two. Despite the risk, these stocks have great growth potential. Large-cap funds are usually less volatile unless there is some news.
Will small caps do well in 2024?
Given the changing macroeconomic backdrop, we outline why we see potential value for investors in small caps in 2024. The consensus is that interest rates look to have peaked, with markets now pricing in cuts across many major economies in 2024, something which could prove beneficial to small caps.
For a long term horizon best to have 30% into Large cap, 50% into Mid cap and remaining 20% into small cap. Over next 10 years, allocation should be trimmed to reduce exposure to mid cap by 40%, small cap by 20% and increase exposure to large cap by 60%.
Is it safe to keep more than $500,000 in a brokerage account? It is safe in the sense that there are measures in place to help investors recoup their investments before the SIPC steps in. And, indeed, the SIPC will not get involved until the liquidation process starts.
Disadvantages include high fees, tax inefficiency, poor trade execution, and the potential for management abuses.
Spreading your assets across different brokerage accounts can help protect you against potential fraud or unauthorized access, Roller says. If one broker has a breach, then you can still trade with another investment firm. The safety of your funds is also a concern.
